Social networks win over Latin American Women

Survey conducted by Sophia Mind indicates that 90% of women interviewed use them. Brazil presents a different profile than the other countries surveyed.

Social networks are earning increasing space in women’s habits over recent years. Today, women already represent the majority of social network users worldwide. A survey conducted by the Bolsa de Mulher Group market intelligence company Sophia Mind involving 3,274 women ages 18 to 60 living in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, in addition to Latin American women residing in the United States, revealed that approximately 90% of them use the networks, and of this total, over half access the same at least once per day. The survey also showed a drop in the time dedicated to traditional media in all countries, with the exception of the United States, the only one to show growth in the time dedicated to television.

Differences – Brazil, Argentina and Mexico presented an increased percentage of growth with social networks for economic and cultural reasons. The advance of the Internet, and consequently, social networks, is greater in developing countries, since two years ago, the penetration of this service in these countries was lower when compared to the United States. The activities that women seek in social networks are also different in each country. In Brazil, the interests are highly diverse, ranging from entertainment to work and shopping. In Argentina and Mexico, women access social networks with aims of meeting new people, but also for professional reasons. In the United States, social networks are used to share photos and videos and to look for discounts and purchase opportunities.

Most accessed networks: Differently than the other countries survey, in Brazil, Orkut is still the most highly accessed generic social network – 75% of Brazilian women use it. Facebook predominates in the other countries (United States, 92%; Argentina, 89%; and Mexico, 81%). With relation to the networks with specific content, MySpace is the most highly accessed in all the countries analyzed (United States, 35%; Mexico, 28%; Argentina, 24%; and Brazil, 14%).
