According to data published in April by Nielsen, a company which specializes in Internet, Brazilian Internet users are devoting one in every four hours online accessing social networks and blogs. The increase over the same period last year in the time spent online and the time spent on social networks is of 66% and 24 %, respectively.

Of all Brazilians with Internet access, 86% are present in some type of social network, and devote an average of 5 hours each month to this type of websites.

Orkut is still the most popular social network in Brazil, and is the major contributor to the above-mentioned indexes. Among Italian Internet users, 78% are present in social networks, followed by 77% of Spaniards. In Italy, Facebook is the most accessed social network, featuring prominently ahead of English-speaking countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Even though Facebook is in third place in the ranking of most-accessed websites, behind Google and the collective of search-engines and web portals which belong to Microsoft, it is still the social network which Internet users throughout the world spend most of their time on, averaging six hours a week.
